Djokovic, who won his seventh ATP Finals on Sunday with a straight set win over Jannik Sinner, missed out on Grand Slam this year after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final. Steffi Graf is the only player to have achieved the 'Golden Slam', winning the Australian, French and U.S. Opens, Wimbledon and a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. "Well, you can win four slams and an Olympic gold," Djokovic said. The 24-times Grand Slam winner said he was "very, very proud" of his season.

On Sunday he beat Italy's Jannik Sinner to win a record seventh ATP Finals title. I really would like to win the Davis Cup with Serbia. Traditional Davis Cup powerhouse Australia have not won the Davis Cup for 20 years but under captain Lleyton Hewitt they believe they can go one step further than last year. The Davis Cup will also be a chance for Sinner to shake off any lingering disappointment at losing to Djokovic in the ATP Finals on Sunday. World number four Sinner leads a strong-looking Italy side who will be favourites to beat the Dutch.

After Saturday’s victory over third-ranked Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the ATP Finals, Sinner compared his improvement this year to cooking “pasta pomodoro” (pasta with tomato sauce). Djokovic destroys Sinner to win record seventh ATP Finals title
  + stars: | 2023-11-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
TURIN, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A ruthless Novak Djokovic destroyed home favourite Jannik Sinner to win the ATP Finals title for a record seventh time on Sunday -- reaching yet another milestone in his incredible career. A sell-out crowd in Turin's Pala Alpitour had hoped to cheer the 22-year-old Sinner to the biggest title of his career but Djokovic was simply in a different league. At one point Djokovic won 14 points in a row against a player ranked fourth in the world before Sinner briefly slowed the march of the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic also failed to convert break points that would have given him a 5-2 lead as a few errors crept into his game. The crowd tried their best to energise their man but Djokovic moved on towards victory and a Sinner double fault ended the contest.

Sinner, the only player to win all three group matches, will face either world number one Novak Djokovic or number two Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's final. Sinner secured a decisive break in the next game as some errors flew off the Medvedev racket. Medvedev, sticking relentlessly to his heavy baseline game, grabbed the initiative and levelled the contest when Sinner sent a forehand over the baseline. The world number four brought up three match points with a superb backhand winner and sealed victory at the first attempt. After losing his first six matches against Medvedev, Sinner has now won three in a row against the Russian.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who also has won six titles this season, missed out on becoming the youngest finalist in the season-ending tournament since Pete Sampras in 1991. The twice Grand Slam winner bounced back early in the second set but then dropped serve before Djokovic took a 3-1 lead. Djokovic, aiming for a tournament record seventh title, now prepares for Sinner, who beat Daniil Medvedev, and will be out for revenge after losing to the Italian in the group stage. "I knew it was a high intensity match, we've played four times in the last 18 months," said Djokovic, who now has three wins in five meetings with Alcaraz.

TURIN, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Stefanos Tsitsipas retired after just three games of his Green Group clash against Holger Rune at the ATP Finals on Tuesday, handing the Danish debutant his first victory in the event. Greek world number six Tsitsipas looked uncomfortable as he trailed 2-1 and after consulting with a doctor at the changeover he decided that he could not continue. Tsitsipas, who lost in straight sets to Jannik Sinner in his opening match on Sunday, appeared to be troubled by a back problem and left the court to a few jeers from the large crowd inside the Pala Alpitour. Rune, who lost to world number one Novak Djokovic in his first match on Sunday, will now face Sinner in his final round-robin match still with a chance of reaching the semi-finals. TURIN, Italy, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Jannik Sinner made a dream start to the ATP Finals with a comprehensive 6-4 6-4 defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas in their opening Green Group clash on Sunday. World number one Novak Djokovic begins his Green Group quest later on Sunday when he faces Danish youngster Holger Rune. Sinner wrapped up the opening set in 40 minutes and when he broke serve at the start of the second set he never looked like relinquishing control against a flat-looking Tsitsipas. "It was a long week before coming here and I was excited to finally step on court," the 22-year-old Sinner said. "I had to fight to survive," the 35-year-old said in remarks provided by the ATP. If Djokovic wins the final, he will claim the biggest prize in tennis history, cashing in $4,740,300 for lifting the tournament trophy undefeated. But he will have to tame Ruud first, who confidently swatted aside an error-prone Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-4 in their semi-final affair. Ruud quickly extinguished that momentum, however, holding his arms out wide after clinching the match with a backhand winner down the line. Nadal signs off with win, avoids matching worst run

With world number four Ruud already assured of a semi-final berth the match was in reality a dead rubber. Even so the first set was full of intensity inside the Pala Alpitour where the afternoon crowd were firmly behind Nadal. The 23-year-old Ruud went down 0-40 on serve at 5-6 and world number two Nadal needed just one chance to seal the set, punching away a volley into an empty court. It was a similar story in the second set with nothing between the players until Nadal pounced again in the 12th game. Ruud saved one match point but Nadal then clubbed away a backhand winner to finish his season on a high.

Victory means Nadal is likely to end the year ranked number two but after injury worries and hardly playing since the U.S. Open he was just happy to be firing on all cylinders again. He would then arrive early in Australia to prepare for his challenge for a record-extending 23rd Grand Slam title. "Not only because of the preparation for Australia, but because of preparation for myself for the rest of the season." "That's the best news possible, especially knowing that now the virus is more under control, around the world," Nadal said. Djokovic was deported before this year's Australian Open after failing to have a COVID-19 vaccination.

Summary Nadal slumps to second loss in TurinAlcaraz on brink of being year-end No. 1TURIN, Italy, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Felix Auger-Aliassime left Rafa Nadal's title hopes at the ATP Finals in tatters as he beat the struggling Spaniard 6-3 6-4 in round-robin action at the Pala Alpitour Stadium on Tuesday. Nadal, the record 22-times Grand Slam champion, has now lost four successive ATP Tour matches for the first time since 2009. Serving at 3-4 Nadal led 40-0 but a couple of double faults and some baseline errors allowed Auger-Aliassime to break. If that happens Alcaraz will be confirmed as the youngest year-end number one since the ATP rankings were introduced in 1973.
